SkyDemon Connectivity

From the simple reception of GPS data to help you navigate, through information on other traffic flying around you, to communications with other avionics, SkyDemon works seamlessly with a wide variety of third-party devices.

In 2024 we built Bluetooth LE capabilities into SkyDemon, enabling stable wireless connectivity to a wide range of cockpit avionics that support RS232 communication. In most cases your avionics engineer will need to set this up as a permanent installation in your panel, after which it is very simple to connect SkyDemon to your aircraft.

Traffic Receivers

SkyDemon can display other aircraft on your map and in a dedicated traffic display instrument, and it can also warn you when you are going to get too close to another aircraft. It can only do this when connected to a traffic receiver. There are various technologies for the sharing of aircraft position - known as electronic conspicuity - and various products designed to receive it.

The three most popular products and technologies for air-to-air sharing of aircraft position in Europe are below. When connected to them, they also supply the GPS data used for navigation.

SkyEcho Broadcasts your position with ADS-B so the widest possible selection of other aircraft can receive it. Receives ADS-B data and can also receive FLARM data as long as you have purchased a FLARM decoding subscription.
PilotAware Broadcasts your position using a proprietary protocol so that other PilotAware users can see it. Receives ADS-B data and PilotAware data directly, and other traffic via a ground network (when in range).
FLARM Broadcasts your position using a proprietary protocol so that other FLARM users can see it. Receives FLARM data and many devices receive ADS-B data too.

SkyDemon connects to most of these devices via WiFi: you must first connect your device to the WiFi network established by the device, then SkyDemon can make its connection. The Air Avionics AT-1 also supports Bluetooth connectivity, which is an easier and more reliable way of connecting.

Cockpit Radios

Using our Bluetooth connectivity you can connect wirelessly to your radio, and SkyDemon can then tune it for you. No more manual tuning of frequencies: wherever you see a radio frequency on screen, simply touch it and it's sent to the radio.

Most radios popularly installed in light aircraft and capable of being tuned remotely will work with SkyDemon. For more information, see the user manual.

Autopilots and Other Avionics

Using our Bluetooth connectivity you can connect wirelessly to either your autopilot or other avionics that support RS232 communication, and SkyDemon then sends a constant stream of data about your position, trajectory, and the leg you are navigating. This means that your autopilot will be able to fly the enroute portion of the route you have planned, and other avionics such as an HSI/CDI can use the same data to enhance your situational awareness.

GPS and autopilot data is in a standardised NMEA format, so most autopilots that can receive this data from a navigator via RS232 will work with SkyDemon. For more information, see the user manual.

Air Traffic Control

SkyDemon can create and file perfect ICAO flightplans based on the VFR flight you've planned, and the aircraft profile you're using, with very little need for you to type extra information after your first time. It's easy to specify crew contact information and data on equipment carried.

In most cases, you can easily file your flightplan for an international departure from your mobile device when you are ready to go. We give you options to cancel or delay flightplans once they're filed, and ATC can respond to your flightplan with questions or feedback if they wish.
